integrating innovative stormwater techniques

EOR collaborated with SALA Architects, Inc. and Coen + Partners in developing an integrated site design that would incorporate innovative stormwater management techniques. As the highly detailed and integrated landscape plan required a more intensive and sensitive approach, EOR designed a stormwater management plan that was inspired by the site’s pre-settlement hydrology.

By establishing a site's pre-settlement runoff conditions, one can help preserve those resources that are still unaffected by land altering activities, in addition to providing conditions that will allow the pre-settlement natural communities to re-establish themselves. In this area, pre-settlement conditions consisted of Oak Savanna with small open spaces containing prairie grasses under a Burr Oak tree canopy and stormwater runoff would have been very low due to the porous surface soils and canopy's absorption ability.

Techniques used:

EOR achieved pre-settlement runoff through the incorporation of infiltration and bioretention techniques that promoted infiltration and plant uptake while creating an amenity for the business campus and an acceptable buffer for the neighboring residents. Such as the incorporation of native plantings and the use of a permeable grass paving system in place of a typical asphalt parking surface.
