Thunder Bay Stormwater Retrofits

Thunder Bay Stormwater LID Retrofits

The City of Thunder Bay is upgrading the aging stormwater system in the urban core of the community to become more resilient to climate change and protect Lake Superior from the impacts of urban runoff. EOR designed seven of the first LID retrofits in the City, many of which were identified and prioritized via the City-wide Stormwater Mgmt. Plan & the McVickar Protection and Rehabilitation Plan also by EOR.

The bioretention and biofiltration facilities fit into the dense mature residential and commercial core of Thunder Bay. In addition to the stormwater benefits of these projects, EOR’s landscape design also enhance the walkability and aesthetic value.

Client Benefits

  • Being the first installations in the City and Region EOR proactively walked stakeholders through each step of the process and overcame the predictable obstacles of limited materials and contractor experience.
  • Navigated the shallow depth to bedrock and groundwater common throughout the City via astute site selection and design modifications.
  • Developed renderings to illustrate the proposed retrofits and gain stakeholder buy-in for the projects.
