Confederation Park Stormwater LIDs

Confederation Park Retrofit LIDs

Located in Edmonton, Confederation Park is well programmed and used by two adjacent schools and community sports programs (containing several ball diamonds, soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts and a track). In reviewing the park for a much-needed renewal, EOR analyzed the existing drainage issues and for the potential to incorporate Low Impact Development (LID) practices into the landscape to better manage stormwater runoff on site.

EOR identified multiple opportunities for LID practices at Confederation Park, including four moderate-to-large sized bioretention features, two bioretention gardens, and an underground stormwater harvesting system to collect runoff from the park and surrounding neighborhood. The LID facilities sited in the park are located at existing outlet points from the site and sized to accommodate runoff from the contributing area based on land use.

Client Benefits

  • Bioretention areas collect and store rainwater while nourishing plants and filtering pollutants.
  • Native grasses and forbs will bloom year-round and beautify the park.
  • Underground storage is designed to reduce pressure on downstream stormwater infrastructure, and offer reused water for irrigation.
