McVicar Creek Protection Plan
McVicar Creek Protection & Rehabilitation Plan
EOR completed Thunder Bay’s first watershed protection plan, uniting the City and stakeholders. Previously, the City had essentially no stormwater management regulations or established incentives. This project moved-beyond the traditional first-steps of “introductory stormwater management” to incorporating the leading watershed management and green infrastructure approaches used today.
The plan is a comprehensive assessment of the 50 km2 watershed (which supports a coldwater stream) and a detailed gap analysis. Incentive, regulatory, educational protection, & restoration strategies were also identified and prioritized. Implementation strategies were tailored based on the unique physical, social, and climatic characteristics of the community and watershed.
Client Benefits
- Built consensus among five city departments and seven outside stakeholder groups.
- Efficiently adjusted scope mid-project per assessment findings and stakeholder input.
- Over 50 stormwater retrofit projects were design & vetted in preparation for future grant and educational campaigns.
- Project served as a precedent for the city-wide Stormwater Master Plan, later completed by EOR.
