Regional Trail Improvements

Three Rivers Trail Design

EOR designed and oversaw the reconstruction of a trail that connects a Hastings neighborhood to more than 170 miles of the regional Three Rivers Park trail system. The existing trail had fallen into disrepair and was deemed too narrow to accommodate safe multi-user traffic. To address these concerns, the new design widened the asphalt trail to 12 feet, creating adequate space for safe, multi-purpose recreational use by pedestrians, cyclists, and other trail users.

The project presented unique design and constructibility challenges that required careful consideration. A top priority for both the city and local residents was minimizing tree removals along the corridor, which posed significant constraints through certain narrow sections where the trail alignment options were limited. EOR’s design approach prioritized accessibility throughout the route, carefully addressing terrain that varied from steep grades to flat sections while maintaining ADA compliance standards.

  • Improved safety for trail users and accessibility for runners, walkers, and bicyclists.
  • Connection to over 170 miles of regional trail system promotes an active, healthy lifestyle and improves quality of life for residents.
